Here are a couple of dates for your diaries over the next few days as its a bit of an action packed bank holiday weekend.
First of all, get yourself over to Platform Six where you can download the latest episode of my fortnightly radio show. Special guest mix this week from none other than Electro house DJ Piqué !!!! As always, the special guest mix is sandwiched between two very phat choice slices of hand cut funky house mixed by myself. Its a great show that also includes one of the latest tracks from Shola Ama and a bumpin’ cut from Crimes Against Disco!
Now on to the live events… Kicking off with TONIGHT. Yes yes, tonight you can catch myself on the decks up at the always funky, Funky End bar in Aldershot alongside the hairless wonder that is Tom Upton closely followed by the lanky legend Mark Masters. Free entry all night with music pumping out from 9pm until late.
If you haven’t got your fill of fresh upfront Funky House tunes by then, you can continue the party TOMORROW NIGHT over at the HaHa bar in Guildford. Usual suspects of Tom Upton and Mark Masters will be in control of your dancefloor, plus I will be there too to spin a couple of tunes. Once again, it’s free entry all night so to be fair you have no excuses not to turn up. Saturday will be a good one as I plan to have a couple of beers and dance around like a lemon.
Hope to see you there! Keep it funky.

A few weeks ago, I was mooching around the Hed Kandi web site and saw that they were due to release a competition soon. It was billed to be the mother of all competitions where, in a nutshell, the prize would be a residency with Hed Kandi, playing at parties all over the world and living the jet-set lifestyle.
This competition really appealed to me and I got quite excited about the prospect of jetting around the world with some of the top DJs playing for such a well known brand.
So I had a look at their website this morning and saw that the details for entering the competition had been released. What would the rules be? How would they be judging this competition for the ultimate prize? I read on to find out.
Whoever gets the most votes, wins.
I’m sorry? What was that? Whoever gets the most votes, wins??? What kind of stupid competition is that? Allow me to explain.
To enter the competition, you have to create a Hed Kandi page on Facebook. This page is then used to describe all about you, have some press releases, some videos, mixes, releases, biography and so on. There will be a button on the page where, when clicked, will give you one vote. The idea is to get as many votes as possible to make the top 10 leaderboard. If you are on the leaderboard when the competition closes, then you have a chance of winning.
It doesn’t really make sense to me. If Hed Kandi are looking to take someone around the world with them, if they are looking for a DJ to represent their brand, surely they would want to pick a DJ based on their skills and not how many friends they have, or how deep they roll.
By running the competition in this way, it is not impossible for Hed Kandi to have a top ten leaderboard of bedroom jock wannabes who happen to have an entourage behind them.
This has really upset me. I thought this would be a good competition to enter because I think I might have the skills that they are looking for, but there is no “competition”, no comparison of talent and I am reluctant to get pipped at the post by some kid who happens to have over a million “friends” on myspace.
As marketing campaigns go however, it has to be said that this is very clever of Hed Kandi. This is a great way to get other people to do their marketing for them and they are really using the social networks to promote and enforce their brand. What better way than to create a popularity-based contest in order to get people spreading the word and marketing the Hed Kandi product for them.
So from a marketing angle, I genuinely applaud you Hed Kandi, you have found a way to really harness the web of today and use it to your advantage.
But as a DJ, I feel cheated and I fear that each and every day this industry is starting to become less and less about how talented the DJ is and more and more about how many people walk through the door.
If you like, you can enter the Hed Kandi competition here.

As usual, I’ve been working my fingers (and ears!) to the bone to get to you some of the latest cuts from around club land. each month I try to think of how best to describe the mix to you so that you get encouraged to download it, but this month I think that the music pretty much speaks for itself.
The first track I play is a Robbie Rivera remix of a guaranteed floorfiller - Basement Jaxx and Do Your Thing. Its probably got one of the longest intros in the world, but when it kicks in you will be bouncing around like you need a padded room. Guaranteed or your money back!
ESquire, Jamie Wamie and Future Funk head up the next few remixes to keep the vibe going. Audio Jacker makes a very welcome return with Check It Out swiftly followed by a superb oldskool vibe track by Drumattic Twins.
Seriously, words can not do it justice. So take advantage of the beautiful weather this weekend, download this mix, put it on CD or whack it on your MP3 player and crank it up as far as you can.
Feedback and comments are always welcome.

Show #5 of my funky house radio show Platform Six is now archived and ready for you to listen. This week, I feature a special DJ guest mix by DJ Alex Lee from the Good Groove.
As usual it’s a funky blend of old and new with a breakbeat style theme to the first half. I also get first play of the latest track from Jamie Wamie which is another beautiful piece from this talented producer.
Check out the archived show over at SSradio or, if you want, you can hear the whole mix go out live today at 4pm GMT on Lifted Radio. Tune in and let me know what you think.

The clocks went forwards the other night. That’s a bad thing because it means we lose an hour from our weekend. Rubbish! But the good news is that this means it is now officially the start of British Summertime.
And what better way to celebrate than to send you this latest offering of fresh club cuts which is guaranteed to make the sun shine. I love the sun.
Kicking off is a track I’ve had for a while and have been meaning to add to my mix for ages. It was sent to me from someone who got in touch via MySpace and is a really nice start to this month’s set.
Funky saxaphone business soon follows thanks to Jolyon Petch vs General Lee and a sweet transition into a track from Soulshaker that was released last year, but I’m adding it to this months mix because its so damn good.
It just gets better and better from here on in, tracks from Armand van Helden and also my new favourite producer Audio Jacker. Until The Break Of Dawn has traces of classic oldskool Garage throughout and I am a bit of a sucker for the classics so I thought I’d throw it in. Hope you like.
I finish up the mix with another belter from DJ Deekline. Lately he’s been producing some really good funky breakbeat crossover tracks that fit well into the style that I like.
Download this month’s funky house mix.
Hope you enjoy the mix. As usual, keep the comments coming in either via Facebook, or through the contact page as it is you people that I make these mixes for.
Also, don’t forget to check out my new bi-monthly radio show called Platform Six now airing on both SSRadio and Lifted Radio.

For those that don’t know, Platform Six is my new radio show that is being broadcast to the world via the magical delights of the internet.
Every fortnight you get to hear some classic and upfront funky house tuneage mixed by self. Plus you also get to hear me jabber on about pointless crap too.
Each show is two hours long and has a featured guest mix tucked within it’s depths. I try to cover a wide spectrum of funky house sub-genres but essentially it’s all just a load of tracks that I like all strung together with a bit of filler in the middle. I like it and I hope you do too.
Now that you know what it’s all about, why not check it out? It is free after all. You can find my bi-monthly Platform Six show on SSradio here (login required):http://ssradiouk.com/shows/platform-six/ or on Lifted Radio here: http://lifted-radio.co.uk/podcasts/?cat=69
